RPCC Gives Back to Community with
“Project Graduation… Feed a Body. Feed a Mind.”
SORRENTO, La. – The Beta Xi Mu chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa Honor Society at River Parishes Community College participated
this year in “Project Graduation … Feed a Body, Feed a Mind”,
a nationwide initiative designed to help alleviate hunger and illiteracy
in our community. Graduating students and their guests were asked to
bring non-perishable food items and children’s books to the college
graduation ceremony, which was held May 23.
“Such a simple gesture of bringing a canned good or book to our
commencement ceremony really helped to improve the quality of life in
our community,” said Chancellor Joe Ben Welch, “We were
excited to have this opportunity and look forward to participating again
next year.”
The children’s books were presented to the St. Elizabeth’s
Hospital, for use by pediatric patients, on Tuesday, June 27. The books
were received by Jackie Darville, Director of Patient Care Services,
Medical/Surgical Unit.
Darville said, "St. Elizabeth Hospital is blessed to have the support
that it has from organizations such as River Parish Community College.
It's an honor to accept these books on behalf of our pediatric patients,
who I know will put them to good use."
Food items collected were turned over to the St. Theresa of Avila Food
Bank a day earlier.
“Project Graduation” was started in 1998 at Burlington County
College in New Jersey. Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for
two-year colleges, adopted the program in 2002. River Parishes Community
College participated for the first time this year, as the school’s
Beta Xi Mu chapter was chartered in January of this year.
