Students Encouraged to Register for Fall Semester at RPCC

SORRENTO, La. – Officials at River Parishes Community College in Sorrento are encouraging prospective students to sign up for classes soon, because the school expects another record enrollment this fall. Compared with numbers from the same time last year – calculated prior to Hurricane Katrina – enrollment is up by 68 percent. Returning and prospective students at River Parishes Community College still have time to register for the upcoming 2006 fall semester. Returning students and first-time freshmen are encouraged to call and make a registration appointment as soon as possible.

The first day of fall classes is Monday, August 21.

In December 2005, the trade journal “Community College Week” named River Parishes Community College the fourth-fastest growing community college with less than 2,500 students in the nation. The college gained nearly 100 students last fall by accepting students enrolled in other schools displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

“It looks like our enrollment growth is going to outpace the growth of our facilities. We are excited about the future of RPCC and what that means for our area,” said Chancellor Joe Ben Welch. “The new fall semester is coming up quickly, so I encourage not only our returning students and traditional first-time freshmen, but anyone who has been thinking of going back to school at the higher education level, to come in and register.”

The college is offering three new courses this semester: African-American History, Logic and Human Sexuality. Core courses such as biology, English, history, math, speech and theater will be offered in LaPlace. Students enrolled in offsite classes receive the same student benefits as their counterparts who attend class at the main campus.

“We expect all of our classes to fill up fast. Students need to register as early as possible to guarantee the best class schedule,” said Allison Vicknair, Dean of Students and Enrollment Management.

Interested students should contact the Office of Student Services at 225-675-8270 or visit the campus for more information.

Late registration for the upcoming fall semester is August 14 – 18.

River Parishes Community College is a two-year learning institution, fully-accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate Degrees.
